During the recently launched New Patriotic Party (NPP) manifesto event in Takoradi, Western Region, Vice President and party flagbearer H.E. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia outlined his vision for the country. He described his agenda as “Bold Solutions,” aimed at tackling the severe economic hardships and high unemployment rates if he wins the upcoming general elections.
However, a well-known Akan adage suggests, “One must seriously consider the condition of the person making promises to determine if they can deliver.”
This sentiment is reflected in the Vice President’s home constituency of Walewale, which erupted into political chaos on Monday, September 9, 2024, during the re-run of the NPP Parliamentary Primary
The re-run followed a court injunction in June 2024 on Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, restraining him from holding himself as the elected parliamentary candidate after winning the previous election.
The injunction, issued by Justice Richard Kugyapaw, was prompted by a challenge from the incumbent MP, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, who claimed irregularities in the election process.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Hajia Zuweratu is the cousin of Dr. Bawumia, while her rival, Dr. Kabiru, is an aide to the Vice President.
This has left many wondering why Dr. Bawumia, who promises bold national solutions, has been unable to resolve a dispute within his constituency, home to a population of just over 175,000.
Critics have begun to question Bawumia’s leadership, with some constituents openly expressing doubt.
“Can Bawumia be trusted at all?” asked one frustrated local. “He claims to have solutions for the country’s problems, yet he can’t even mediate between his cousin and his aide to prevent political chaos in his backyard.”
The Walewale election scene turned violent, with reports of warning shots fired and ballot boxes snatched, forcing police intervention.
The chaos culminated when a former NPP Chairman from Yagaba-Kubori, Mr. Akamari Bawa, disrupted the sorting of ballots by snatching a box. The police were forced to fire warning shots before arresting the suspect.
Speaking to journalists, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the 3rd National Vice Chairman of the NPP, confirmed that election officials were now waiting at the Walewale police station, alongside the Electoral Commission and the police commander, to recount the ballots and declare the winner.
“As I speak, we are at the Walewale police station waiting for both candidates and their agents. The Electoral Commission will conduct the recount here to ensure the election’s integrity,” Masawudu noted.
Despite Dr. Bawumia’s national promises, the unresolved tensions in his home constituency raise questions about his ability to tackle broader national issues if he cannot settle internal party disputes.
