The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has received the support of Advocates for Christ Ghana (A4CG), a prominent Christian group, and its allies.
The group has called on President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill, which was recently passed by Parliament, and to stand with the Parliament, the Ghanaian people, and his Christian faith.
The group praised the bill, saying it was a major victory for humanity and the protection of Ghana’s socio-cultural values.
The anti-gay bill, which has been a source of controversy for the last three years, seeks to affirm the country’s position on issues of gender, marriage, and procreation, and to oppose the LGBTQI+ ideology and practices.
Parliament, in a landmark decision on February 28, 2024, passed what has been dubbed the anti-gay bill eliciting a wave of reactions across the nation and beyond.
Advocates for Christ Ghana, in a statement, emphasized the bill’s alignment with the faith, beliefs, and teachings of the vast majority of Ghanaians, noting that over 71% of the population identifies as Christian.
“We note with gratitude the significant milestone achieved in Ghana’s Parliament…This is a victory for humanity as the LGBTQI+ philosophy and practice threatens the very existence of humans in the near distant future,” A4CG stated.
The group extended its congratulations to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Deputy Speakers, and other parliament members for their roles in ensuring the bill’s passage.
Special commendation was given to the eight members of parliament who championed the bill, including Hon. Sam Nartey George and Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, among others, for their “courage and resilience” against opposition.
The passage of the Bill has not been without controversy, drawing criticism from human rights organizations and international bodies concerned about the potential implications for LGBTQI+ rights in Ghana.
As Ghana awaits the President’s decision, A4CG has appealed to civil society organizations, churches, and families to educate the public on the bill’s importance, urging them to resist misinformation.
The group’s message is clear: “May God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong, bold to defend forever the cause of freedom and right.”
