The Effutu branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has slammed the recent transfer of Effutu Electoral Municipal Director, Madam Emelia Ama Akotia, by the Electoral Commission (EC) chair Jean Mensah.
The sudden transfer, which takes effect immediately, coincides with ongoing limited voter registration and transfer exercises.
In a statement, the Effutu NDC condemned the transfer and called on Madam Jean Mensah to swiftly reverse the decision.
“We in the NDC condemn this transfer in no uncertain terms and are calling on Madam Jean Mensah to reverse this unholy decision immediately,” the statement read.
The NDC underscored past issues with the Effutu Electoral Commission, including allegations of a bloated voters’ register during the 2020 elections.
Despite these challenges, the party acknowledged recent efforts by the Commission to address these issues.
However, the timing of Madam Akotia’s transfer has raised serious concerns.
“The sudden transfer of Madam Emelia Ama Akotia from Effutu, in the middle of the limited voter registration exercise, therefore, comes as a shock to us,” the statement continued.
The NDC demanded transparency, “Why is Ama being transferred with immediate effect, especially in the middle of the ongoing registration and transfer exercises? If she has committed any offence, what was the nature of the offence that is so grave the Electoral Commission could not wait until the end of the ongoing registration and transfer exercises?”
The party also raised suspicions about potential political motivations behind the transfer and recent altercations between Akotia and local NPP leaders have fueled speculation.
“Why has Madam Ama Akotia been transferred just days after reportedly clashing with elements within the leadership of the Effutu NPP? Does Ama’s transfer have anything to do with her unwillingness to comply with NPP demands?” the statement queried.
The Effutu NDC also cautioned against illegal voter transfers orchestrated by NPP elements in various constituencies indicating that the NPP is enticing voters in other constituencies with money to transfer their votes to Effutu in favor of the NPP.
The NDC urged the public to follow legal guidelines for voter transfers and called on the general public to refrain from transferring their votes to Effutu unless eligible.
