The Greater Accra Regional Minister and Ayawaso Central MP, Henry Quartey, has expressed his worry over the exit of many experienced MPs from both the governing NPP and the opposition NDC.
This comes after the NPP lost 28 of its MPs in the 2023 primaries, with 18 others choosing not to contest again. The NDC also saw 18 of its MPs defeated in their primaries.
Hon. Henry Quartey said the loss of these seasoned lawmakers would have implications for the Parliament and the nation at large.
He urged the newly elected NPP parliamentary candidates to learn the ropes of parliamentary work quickly to fill the gap left by their seniors.
The exit of these veteran legislators, he said, was a big change for the country and the legislature.
The Acra Regional Minister, however, disagreed with the idea that political parties should shield experienced MPs from internal competition.
He argued for democratic processes within the parties, where every member should have a chance to run for elections.
This, he said, shows a respect for democracy within the party system, despite the difficulties caused by the loss of experienced parliamentarians.
