John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed his commitment to legalising the operations of commercial motorbike riders, known locally as ‘Okada‘ if he wins the 2024 general elections.
The NDC’s previous efforts to operationalise the Okada business were thwarted by their defeat in the 2020 elections. Addressing motorbike riders in Ashaiman on Friday, May 31, 2024, Mahama emphasized that the legalisation of Okada is included in the party’s 2024 manifesto.
He criticised the current government for not fulfilling its promise to replace motorbikes with cars. “We promised to legalise Okada, but our opponents objected, claiming it would cause accidents. They promised to replace your motorbikes with cars. Have you received the cars? It was all a lie. This government is known for making false promises,” Mahama stated.
Standing before the riders, Mahama urged them to spread the message across all regions. “From Ashaiman, I declare that we will legalise the Okada business when we win the 2024 elections. Your freedom will begin on January 7, 2025, when I am sworn in as President,” he proclaimed.
Mahama also expressed concern over the rising unemployment rate since he left office in 2016. “The unemployment rate was 8.5% when I left office, now it’s 14.7% under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government. Without Okada, the unemployment rate would have soared to 25%,” he noted.
He pointed out that East African countries have successfully legalised and regulated Okada operations. “We can do the same. When we take power, we will legalise it and ensure safety through proper regulation. The National Road Safety Commission will train you on safe riding,” Mahama assured.
He also urged Okada riders to adhere to the rules that will be implemented under the next NDC government. “When we legalise Okada, you must follow the rules. Passenger safety is paramount. We will also help those without licenses to obtain them,” he concluded.
