The Ministry of Transport is urging the public to disregard reports indicating an imminent increase in the fare of public transportation nationwide.
This comes in response to a recent announcement by the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), declaring a 20% fare adjustment effective January 24, 2024, citing the impact of excessive taxes on spare parts.
In a statement, the GPRTU stated, “This has become necessary as a result of excessive taxes on spare parts adversely affecting our operations due to the hike in its prices.”
Contrary to the GPRTU’s declaration, however, the Ministry of Transport clarified, “There has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of transport fares.”
The Ministry urged the public to continue paying the existing fares, and any potential changes would be communicated after negotiations, as done in the past.
The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to maintaining “fair and reasonable public transport fares,” taking into consideration the needs of both transport operators and the general public.
