The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong disapproval of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) management of errors in the provisional voters’ register.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah argued that the EC cannot effectively fix the problems it created.
His criticism follows the EC’s refusal to heed the NDC’s call for an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.
Dr. Boamah underscored that resolving discrepancies should not be left to the body responsible for the errors.
“The very doctor who created the problem should not be the one to resolve it,” he said stressing the need for an impartial audit to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process.
The NDC has repeatedly raised alarms over irregularities, including unauthorized voter transfers and system vulnerabilities, calling for an independent review. Dr. Boamah noted, “If the EC has nothing to hide, it must agree.
This has been done before and can be done again,” referring to previous independent audits that ensured transparency.
Despite the EC rejecting their request, Dr. Boamah continues to push for an independent audit, insisting it’s the only way to restore public trust in the 2024 elections.
He also proposed involving international experts in the process, highlighting that global development partners like the UNDP are ready to support the audit if the EC consents.
