The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has announced a ‘naming and shaming’ campaign, aimed at exposing individuals and groups engaged in illegal mining (galamsey) activities.
The association encouraged its members to publish the names and photos of those involved in these activities, regardless of their social standing.
“We are urging our members to take a firm and dispassionate stand against the practice and to expose those complicit in galamsey. This is a necessary step to ensure accountability and to show that no one is above the law,” PRINPAG said.
The association condemned the widespread environmental destruction caused by galamsey across the country and called for collective action, urging its members and all stakeholders to join the fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
In a press release dated September 10, 2024, it expressed deep concern over the harmful effects of galamsey, particularly on Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and the environment.
It warned that if not addressed urgently, the damage would have long-lasting consequences for future generations.
“The wanton environmental devastation driven by greed is a grave threat to the well-being of the Ghanaian people and the future of our country,” the statement read.
PRINPAG cautioned its members to resist any form of bribery or inducement, emphasizing that those found to have been influenced financially or materially in a way that undermines the association’s efforts would face expulsion.
In a direct appeal to Parliament, PRINPAG called for leadership in the fight against galamsey, stressing the need for non-partisan efforts to tackle the issue.
The association praised the leadership of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his role in addressing illegal mining and called on state institutions to strictly enforce environmental laws.
“As a nation, we must act with urgency to preserve our environment. The laws that govern environmental sustainability must be enforced, and we should leverage technology to address the challenges posed by these destructive activities,” the release added.
PRINPAG also pledged its support for the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining and urged its members to actively contribute to the national effort to end the galamsey menace.
“The fight is a collective one, and PRINPAG is ready to play its part in helping to curb this menace,” the Association said.
