Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is keen to oust Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng from office out of fear of future prosecution.
Kpebu claimed that President Akufo-Addo is leveraging former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s animosity towards Agyebeng to pressure the current Special Prosecutor to resign.
“Akufo-Addo is scared that the way Kissi Agyebeng is showing a bit of independence and a bit of steam if he leaves Kissi in office, he is likely to prosecute him and his appointees,” Kpebu stated.
Speaking on TV3’s political talk show The Key Points on Saturday, May 18, Martin Kpeu disclosed that President Akufo-Addo had previously pressured Kissi Agyabeng to resign. However, the Special Prosecutor refused and held a press conference to express his frustrations.
“I have my sources at the presidency, and you think everyone is happy. He [Akufo-Addo] asked Kissi to resign; he refused,” Kpebu revealed.
Kpebu criticized the President’s commitment to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), labelling it a public relations stunt.
“President Akufo-Addo did not mean it when he told Kissi Agyebeng during his swearing-in that he expected the new SP would do his work independently.”
“It is a PR stunt. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is a PR stunt by Akufo-Addo. That is why he has not given the office an establishment budget,” he stated.
According to Kpebu, the OSP lacks essential resources such as a forensic lab, cyber equipment and other logistics, which have not been funded by the government.
“They need a forensic lab, they need machines, they need cyber equipment, etc. He hasn’t funded it. It’s just a PR stunt that yes, we set up the office but I didn’t mean it to work,” he said.
Kpebu indicated that Parliament had to step in, which ensured that over 200 offices were recruited.
“Parliament had to step in and say, ‘No, master, move forward.’ We also presented a petition, you know. We’ve been making noise. That is what moved Akufo-Addo. He never meant this institution to work well. It is just a PR stunt,” he added.
Expressing his intentions to hold President Akufo-Addo accountable, Kpebu disclosed plans to file a petition for Akufo-Addo’s prosecution, asserting that others are also preparing to take similar actions.
“I am preparing to file a petition for Akufo-Addo’s prosecution, and other people are also lacing their boots to file petitions against the President and his appointees when they leave office,” he stated.
There have been significant concerns about the independence and future of the Office of the Special Prosecutor since its establishment, which holds potential implications for the current administration and its handling of anti-corruption efforts.
