Minority Deputy Whip Ahmed Ibrahim has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government would have sold the iconic Jubilee House if not for the constraints imposed by the current hung parliament.
He slammed the NPP’s handling of national assets and expressed concern over what he described as a dangerous trend towards privatization.
“The only reason the Jubilee House is still in our possession is because of the hung parliament. If the NPP had an outright majority, they would have sold it off by now,” he stated.
The Deputy Whip was addressing a press conference not long ago.
Jubilee House, serving as the seat of the presidency, holds significant symbolic and functional importance for the nation.
Ahmed Ibrahim accused the NPP government of prioritizing financial gain over national heritage and the public good.
“This balance of power is essential for ensuring that our national treasures are protected,” he said.
He emphasised the crucial role the hung parliament has played in checking the government’s power and preventing decisions that could harm the country’s interests.
The closely contested 2020 elections resulted in a hung parliament, leading to a more balanced distribution of power between the ruling party and the opposition.
Ahmed Ibrahim stressed this balance as a safeguard for the country’s assets, ensuring they are not subject to hasty privatization efforts.
