Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has has established a specialised investigative team at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to investigate deaths related to the 2020 and 2024 elections
This follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama in a letter dated January 10, 2025, that called for a comprehensive investigation into these incidents.
The team, comprised of experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service, is chaired by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe.
The IGP has reportedly set clear timelines for the team to complete its work and submit a report.
In his letter to the President, Dr. Akuffo Dampare assured that all necessary resources would be provided to facilitate the investigation.
He also stressed that the work of the new team would build on efforts already undertaken by the Ghana Police Service since he assumed office in 2021.
One such initiative is the establishment of the Cold Case Unit at the CID Headquarters, which focuses on unresolved criminal cases.
The Cold Case Unit has been investigating the deaths from the 2020 elections and has made significant progress, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
The formation of the specialised team investigate the matter underscores the IGP’s commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
The police administration remains focused on delivering a thorough and impartial investigation, in line with the President’s directive.
