Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has debunked swirling rumours suggesting he harbours political ambitions in the Keta Constituency, declaring emphatically that he has no intention of contesting the seat — either on a party ticket or as an independent candidate.
Addressing a large gathering at a historic homecoming durbar in Tsiame on Thursday, April 17, the Effutu MP made his stance crystal clear.
“I’m not also preparing myself to be an independent candidate for Keta. It will never happen. I will never contemplate being an MP for this area,” Afenyo-Markin stated, firmly quashing speculation surroundoing his homecoming.
Interest in Keta seat
His comments came in the presence of the sitting Member of Parliament for Keta, Hon. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, as the Minority Leader sought to dispel what he called unfounded rumours designed to distract from his genuine development efforts.
Afenyo-Markin reiterated that his presence and support in the Keta area are deeply personal, driven by his family roots — not by political calculation.
“It’s my little contribution for the parents who brought me to life — mom and dad. I’ve chosen to be an MP on my mother’s side. Choice I’ve made,” he emphasized.
The Effutu MP revealed his maternal lineage from Winneba in the Central Region and paternal heritage from Anloga and Nyekonope, explaining his connection to the people of the Volta Region.
As part of his developmental gesture, Afenyo-Markin presented 200 sewing machines and hair dryers to empower women across the constituency to start businesses and drive local economic growth.
While extending gratitude to the traditional leaders and residents for their warm reception, Afenyo-Markin was quick to shut down any idea of political maneuvering.
“We are here to support our brother and the community. And so shall it remain. We want all of us to be together as a family. But for now, no politics,” he said pointedly.
He also pledged continued collaboration with local authorities and MP Gakpey, particularly to support vocational training, access to credit, and market opportunities for women.
“I’m determined to partner the traditional authorities and my colleague, the MP for this area, so we work together to meet the demands for training, access to credit, and markets. This demands that we challenge cultural norms that limit women’s potential and amplify their voices,” he said.
Calling the women of Keta the “real heroes,” Afenyo-Markin praised their resilience and vowed to keep empowering them.
“You, the women, are the daughters of our land who stood firm in the face of adversity. You are the mothers of a generation that will inherit a community where every woman’s potential is appreciated,” he declared.
He made a strong commitment to follow through on local development demands, including calls to support the community’s secondary school, in consultation with the area’s leadership.
“Let me assure our chiefs that the call to support the secondary school has been well received. My father and I have already had discussions, and we’ll consult further with Honorable Gakpey,” he added.
