The Government has announced a decisive shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and surrounding areas, following a renewed outbreak of violence that threatens to undermine ongoing peace initiatives.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday, July 27, and signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government disclosed that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to restore law and order amid rising tensions in the conflict-prone municipality.
“This government is moving from a peacekeeping posture to a peace enforcement strategy in Bawku and other affected communities in response to the disturbing resurgence of violence that risks undoing hard-won progress,” the statement said.

The renewed hostilities, rooted in a protracted chieftaincy dispute, have led to fresh casualties in recent days, despite sustained mediation efforts led by key traditional authorities.
The government expressed appreciation to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Nayiri (Overlord of Mamprugu), and Zugraana (King of Kusaug) for their instrumental roles in advancing the peace process, noting that their combined efforts had brought the region to the brink of resolution before the latest unrest erupted.
“We deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the genuine contributions of the Nayiri and the Zugraana,” the statement continued. “But the very recent killings have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good.”
The move comes as the government imposes stricter curfews and enhances security surveillance across the conflict zone. The statement urged residents to cooperate fully with security forces.
“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement said.
In a direct appeal to residents and parties involved in the dispute, the government urged restraint and commitment to peace.
“We call on all parties to refrain from violence and support the peace process,” said Kwakye Ofosu. “While regretting the inconvenience this peace enforcement intervention may cause to peace-loving people within the affected areas, the Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability.”
The government has also pledged to ensure the safety of all residents in Bawku, including students and other vulnerable groups who have been affected by the persistent insecurity.
