Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant in protecting the country’s liberty, stressing that strong institutions, sound ideas, and responsible citizenship are vital to sustaining the nation’s independence.
Reflecting on the significance of Ghana’s freedom, the former president said independence should serve as a constant reminder that democratic governance thrives when institutions are strengthened and guided by clear philosophies.

In a Facebook message posted on March 6 to mark the 69th anniversary of Ghana’s Independence, Akufo-Addo stressed the enduring lessons of the country’s journey to freedom and the responsibilities it places on citizens.
According to him, the values underpinning independence must continue to guide national development and democratic stability for generations to come.
“Our sovereignty, for us and for future generations, represents the abiding truth that ideas matter; that philosophy shapes politics; that institutions outlive individuals; and that, as it is said, eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty,” he wrote.
The former president concluded his message by extending goodwill to citizens across the country as they commemorate the historic milestone.
“Happy Anniversary, Fellow Ghanaians,” he added.
Ghana celebrates its independence every year on March 6, marking the country’s historic break from British colonial rule in 1957 and its emergence as the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve self-rule
