Kenyan footballer Eric Wafula, once a goalkeeper for Mathare FC, tragically lost his life over the weekend in Nairobi following accusations of phone theft.
According to local media reports, Wafula and a friend were allegedly attacked by a mob shortly after they were accused of snatching a phone from a pedestrian.

The community reportedly used stones and heavy sticks to assault the two men, resulting in their deaths at the scene.
This was not Wafula’s first brush with mob violence. He had previously been rescued by police during a similar incident in Kariobangi, also linked to claims of phone theft.
Mathare FC released a brief statement expressing grief over the loss of their former player, saying: “We are saddened by the passing of our former goalkeeper Eric Wafula. Shine on your way Jagoal. Rest in Peace,” FKF New Mathare FC said.
A police officer from John Saga Police Station also weighed in on the tragedy, noting that Wafula’s football talent had previously shielded him from harm on multiple occasions.
“The fame that came with his talent saved his life on several occasions,” said an officer at John Saga Police Station, per the above-mentioned publication.
“All I can say is he was a talented goalkeeper, It is sad that his life was to end in such a manner.”
