Former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has commended the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) for endorsing significant constitutional reforms aimed at restructuring its internal electoral processes.

In a statement addressed to delegates attending the party’s upcoming Annual Conference, Mr. Agyepong acknowledged the decision to broaden the NPP’s electoral college to include former National Executives, Regional Executives, Members of Parliament, Ministers and their Deputies, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Constituency Executives, describing it as a “significant step forward.”

However, the former General Secretary voiced deep reservations regarding the exclusion of former polling station executives and electoral area coordinators from the expanded electoral college. He labelled this omission a ‘gross injustice’ to the party’s vital grassroots base.

Mr. Agyepong argued that ‘the polling station is the heart and soul of the party,’ stressing its crucial role in fostering volunteerism and testing loyalty driven by dedication rather than monetary incentives. He cautioned that expanding participation at higher levels while neglecting the grassroots risks alienating the very individuals who sustain the party during challenging times and could potentially deepen the existing low morale within their ranks.

He advocated for a more inclusive electoral college system that minimizes the influence of money in internal elections and prioritizes merit.

“Let us not allow manipulation and confusion to take root,” Mr. Agyepong urged, emphasizing the need to build a party that values the contributions of every member who actively participates in its activities.

In his concluding remarks, he appealed to constituency executives to advocate for the inclusion of all past ward and polling station executives and coordinators, dating back to the party’s establishment in 1992.
