Akufo-Addo mourns fallen Ministers, six others in helicopter tragedy

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined a grieving nation in mourning the deaths of several top government officials and military personnel who perished in a tragic Ghana Air Force helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region.

In a deeply moving statement, the former President described the crash as a devastating loss to the nation, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the leadership of the country.

“The entire nation is profoundly shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the military helicopter crash,” Akufo-Addo wrote, calling it one of the darkest moments in Ghana’s recent history.

National tragedy

The crash claimed the lives of:

  • Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment and Science
  • Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC
  • Samuel Aboagye, Presidential Staffer
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

Their deaths were confirmed earlier in the day by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.

Former President Akufo-Addo disclosed that he had personally reached out to President John Dramani Mahama and NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia to convey his condolences and solidarity in this time of national grief.

“I condole with our gallant men of the Ghana Air Force at this time and salute their indispensable role in the public life of our country. My deepest sympathies also go to the bereaved families, who have lost cherished loved ones in service to our country,” he stated.

He ended his statement with a solemn prayer for the departed: “May they find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Ghana. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, but for now, the country remains united in mourning—bound by sorrow, reflection, and a shared sense of loss.
