Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has aimed at Ghana’s cycle of political excesses, declaring it is time to end the era of vendetta-driven governance.
He admitted that successive governments, including his own party’s, had allowed partisan hardliners and state institutions to run unchecked.

You do me, I do you politics
“I am a moderate politician. I believe the excesses, where hardliners take centre stage when a government comes to office, must be a thing of the past. Some of these excesses happened in my time. But we cannot continue with the vicious cycle of ‘you do me, I do you,’” he said.
The Minority Leader cited the recent treatment of the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, who was handcuffed and shoved into a Black Maria over a minor offence, as an example of institutional overreach that stains Ghana’s democracy. “These are things that we don’t need,” he stressed.
He also condemned the recent removal of the Chief Justice, describing it as politically motivated rather than a genuine bid for accountability. “Investigations must not be weaponised for politics,” he warned, adding that governments must pursue reforms without witch-hunts.
Afenyo-Markin pledged to lead a Minority that is constructive yet firm, insisting the governing Majority will be held accountable. “The Majority will take decisions, but I will have my say,” he declared.
He also called for collective responsibility to restore dignity to Parliament, describing it as a family institution where dialogue and cooperation are essential.
The Minority Leader assured Ghanaians his leadership will be guided by moderation, justice, and nation-building, not political retribution.
