Victor Osimhen delivered a commanding performance as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 on Saturday to secure a berth in the semifinals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Napoli striker scored once and provided an assist, leading the Super Eagles past a disciplined Algerian side that had not conceded a goal prior to the quarterfinal clash.

Despite a troubled build-up to the tournament marked by reports of unpaid bonuses, Nigeria produced a composed display in Marrakech.

They dominated large spells of the first half but were unable to convert their chances, with Akor Adams blazing over from close range and Calvin Bassey seeing an effort cleared off the goal line.

The breakthrough arrived moments after the restart. Osimhen rose to meet Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross and expertly guided his header back across goalkeeper Luca Zidane, sending the ball into the far corner. It was the first goal Zidane had conceded at the tournament.

Nigeria doubled their advantage soon after following a well-worked team move. Alex Iwobi released Osimhen, who selflessly squared the ball for Adams to round the advancing Zidane and tap into an empty net.

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković responded with a triple substitution, withdrawing captain Riyad Mahrez and forward Ibrahim Maza, but the changes failed to alter the flow of the game as Nigeria maintained control.

Adams came close to adding a third when he struck the post late on, but the Super Eagles comfortably saw out the victory.

Three-time champions Nigeria will now face tournament hosts Morocco in the second semifinal in Rabat on Wednesday as they continue their quest for a first AFCON title since 2013.

The Super Eagles are also seeking redemption after losing the final of the previous edition to Ivory Coast and missing out on qualification for the World Cup.
