Dr. Bawumia emerged as the winner of the primary held on January 31, 2026, after securing significant support from delegates across the country and the diaspora.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, he emphasized that the outcome reflects overwhelming confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision for Ghana’s future.
“His election represents a clear mandate from NPP delegates across all constituencies to lead the party into the 2028 general elections,” he noted.
Afenyo-Markin also commended the other contenders in the race, including Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
He described the contest as a reflection of the NPP’s strong commitment to internal democracy. Acknowledging the tensions that arose during the campaign, the Minority Leader urged party members to embrace reconciliation and unity.
“We must transform yesterday’s divisions into tomorrow’s collective strength,” he stressed, adding that lessons from the party’s 2024 electoral defeat underscored the importance of unity.
“Unity is not merely a political slogan but our fundamental source of strength,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.
The Minority leader paid tribute to grassroots party structures, including constituency executives and polling station organizers, for their dedication.
“From Tamale to Takoradi, from Aflao to Axim, your tireless efforts form the backbone of our political enterprise,” he noted, urging the party faithful to channel their energy towards supporting Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.
The Minority leader announced the Caucus’s intention to intensify scrutiny of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, citing concerns over the alleged depletion of gold reserves, irregular gold trading, transportation challenges, declining international relations, illegal mining, and youth unemployment.
“We shall hold the government accountable on critical matters affecting ordinary Ghanaians,” he declared.
The Minority leader pledged the Caucus’s full backing for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.
“Our collective experience positions us to provide crucial strategic guidance,” he said, referring to the NPP’s past electoral successes and flagship policies such as Free Senior High School and digitalization reforms.
Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism about Ghana’s future under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership. “We envision a Ghana where Free SHS operates at optimal efficiency, where prosperity is widespread, and where democratic governance thrives,” he stated, reaffirming confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership. “Ghana awaits the restoration of visionary governance,” he added.
