President John Dramani Mahama is set to depart Accra on Monday, March 23, 2026, for New York City to participate in the United Nations General Assembly.

The President is expected to deliver a major address on slavery remembrance and reparatory justice.

The visit forms part of Ghana’s active role in commemorating the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, a global observance dedicated to honouring victims and advancing justice.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s trip is aimed at deepening international dialogue on reparatory justice and historical accountability.

In a statement, he indicated that President Mahama will convene and deliver the keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters, under the theme: “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans.”

The event is expected to bring together global leaders and high-ranking dignitaries to confront the enduring legacy of slavery and chart a path toward justice and restitution.

President Mahama is also scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday, where he will present Ghana’s position—aligned with the African Union—on a landmark resolution seeking to declare the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

As part of his itinerary, the President will participate in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument, in honour of enslaved Africans whose lives were lost during the transatlantic slave trade.

The visit underscores Ghana’s continued leadership in global advocacy for justice, remembrance, and dignity for people of African descent.
