Manchester City lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Sunday after a composed 2-0 victory over Arsenal, with the final ultimately decided by a costly goalkeeping error and moments of individual brilliance.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta opted to start Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, a decision that proved decisive. Early in the second half, the Spaniard failed to hold onto a cross, allowing Nico O’Reilly to head City into the lead. O’Reilly doubled the advantage moments later with a composed close-range finish, effectively sealing the contest.

Both sides fielded backup goalkeepers, with James Trafford impressing for City in the opening stages. Trafford made several crucial saves to keep Arsenal at bay during a tightly contested first half, but the momentum swung firmly in City’s favour after the break.

City’s growing dominance exposed Arsenal’s vulnerabilities, with small defensive lapses proving costly. Arrizabalaga endured a nervy outing, including a booking for a late challenge on Jérémy Doku and moments of hesitation in possession that signalled uncertainty at the back.

Arteta defended his goalkeeper after the match, insisting his selection was based on fairness, given Kepa’s role throughout the competition, while acknowledging that mistakes are part of the game.

Under Pep Guardiola, City were ruthless when it mattered most. O’Reilly, an emerging academy talent, showcased intelligence and composure with perfectly timed runs and clinical finishing to deliver the trophy.

Guardiola, known for his touchline composure, celebrated passionately — even earning a booking after striking an advertising board in a rare emotional outburst.

The match also featured a moment of flair from Rayan Cherki, whose keepie-uppies late in the game entertained fans but drew mixed reactions. While some applauded the showmanship, Ben White responded with a foul that earned him a booking, and Guardiola himself appeared unimpressed by the display.

In the end, City’s clinical edge and Arsenal’s costly errors defined the night, as Guardiola’s side celebrated another piece of carabao cup while the Gunners were left to reflect on missed opportunities.
