The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has suggested that a potential return of André Ayew to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would not come as a surprise—though he insists the decision rests entirely with the technical team.

Ayew, who has been absent from the national team since Ghana’s disappointing outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, continues to divide opinion among fans and pundits following his recent return to club football in Europe.

The 36-year-old forward recently signed for NAC Breda after six months without a club, following his exit from Le Havre AC. His move has reignited debate over a possible recall to the national team.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Adams acknowledged the ongoing public conversation but was firm in distancing himself from selection decisions.

“Fortunately, I’m the minister. Unfortunately, I’m not the coach. The coach has a final say on this; if they include him, why not? I won’t be surprised,” he stated.

Ayew’s omission from Ghana’s squad for recent international friendlies against Austria and Germany has further fueled discussions about his future with the Black Stars.

Since joining NAC Breda as a free agent, the former captain has made 11 appearances, scoring once. While his numbers remain modest, many supporters continue to advocate for his return, pointing to his experience, leadership, and long-standing contribution to the national team.

Ayew remains Ghana’s most capped player and has been a central figure for over a decade, representing the country at multiple AFCON tournaments and on the global stage at the FIFA World Cup.
