Mahama honoured with ‘International Statesperson Award’ for Global Leadership

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has been honoured with the ‘International Statesperson Award’, the highest distinction for global leadership conferred by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia.

The award, which has been presented periodically since 1973, recognises outstanding global leaders whose contributions advance peace, freedom, and lasting impact on international affairs.

President Mahama’s recognition marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first African leader to receive the prestigious accolade since its inception.

According to the Council, the award celebrates exceptional leadership on the global stage, highlighting Mahama’s enduring role in diplomacy, governance, and international cooperation.

Speaking at the ceremony held on Friday, March 27, 2026, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, commended President Mahama’s distinguished career and the values he represents.

She noted that his leadership reflects the core ideals of the award, including a commitment to democratic governance, strengthening international partnerships, promoting peaceful political transitions, advancing regional and economic prosperity, and advocating for Africa on the global stage.

In his acceptance remarks, President Mahama attributed his drive for global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s founding leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.
