The crew of Artemis II has safely returned to Earth, bringing their nine-day mission to a successful close after a landmark journey that has reignited global ambitions for human exploration of the Moon.

The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean just after 01:07 BST (20:07 EDT), marking the end of a mission that saw humans travel farther into space than ever before.

Commander Reid Wiseman confirmed shortly after landing that all four astronauts are in good health.

The crew was airlifted to a U.S. Navy recovery ship, where they underwent routine medical checks before returning to land for further evaluation and debriefing.

The mission’s re-entry phase included a tense but expected six-minute communications blackout as the spacecraft passed through Earth’s atmosphere. Despite the brief loss of contact, the capsule performed as planned and completed a safe descent.

A major highlight of the mission came on April 6, when the spacecraft reached a maximum distance of 406,771 kilometers (252,756 miles) from Earth during its lunar flyby.

This milestone sets a new record for the farthest distance humans have ever traveled in space, surpassing achievements from the historic Apollo program.

Reacting to the successful mission, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman described the moment as a turning point in space exploration.

“We’re back in the business of sending astronauts to the moon. This is just the beginning,” he said.

The success of Artemis II marks a critical step forward for NASA as it prepares for future missions, including Artemis III, which aims to land humans on the Moon for the first time in over five decades.

With systems validated and crew performance confirmed, Artemis II signals the dawn of a new era in deep space exploration.
