President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Pamela Graham as Ghana’s next Auditor-General, in a move seen as a significant step toward strengthening financial oversight and accountability within the public sector.

The nomination was formally conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the President and has been submitted to the Council of State for the constitutionally required consultation.

The decision comes at a critical time, as the Presidency seeks to reinvigorate key governance institutions and restore public confidence in the management of state resources.

Observers say the nomination reflects a broader strategy to tighten scrutiny over public expenditure and enhance institutional discipline.

Ms. Pamela Graham, widely respected in public finance circles, is known for her strong reputation for integrity and professionalism. She is regarded as an authority in institutional governance and public financial management, with expectations high that she will bring renewed rigor to the Audit Service.

Under Article 70(1)(b) of the 1992 Constitution, the President’s appointment of an Auditor-General requires the advice of the Council of State, making the consultative process a crucial step before confirmation.

The Council is expected to meet in the coming days to assess her credentials and provide its advice. If endorsed, Ms. Graham will assume one of the most critical accountability roles in the country, responsible for auditing public accounts and ensuring compliance across all state institutions.

Upon confirmation, she will succeed Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, who has served in the role since September 2021. His tenure has been marked by several high-profile audits, but the current administration appears poised to usher in a new phase of oversight under Ms. Graham.

Analysts suggest her appointment could signal a tougher stance on financial irregularities, with expectations that she will apply a more forensic approach to auditing the national purse
