Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz named Black Stars coach for 2026 World Cup

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, in consultation with key stakeholders, has appointed experienced tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The Portuguese manager takes over at a crucial time and is expected to lead Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Queiroz brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously managed top sides including Real Madrid and served as assistant coach at Manchester United.

At the international level, he has handled teams such as the Portugal national team and the Iran national team.

Carlos Queiroz’s World Cup credentials are notable. He led the South Africa national team to qualification for the 2002 tournament, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

Beyond that, Queiroz has also coached in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, further strengthening his global managerial profile.

He is expected to immediately begin preparations with the Black Stars ahead of the Mundial, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.

Ghana will open its Group campaign against the Panama national team on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, before taking on the England national team and Croatia national team in subsequent matches.
