Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo is set to receive a distinguished traditional honour as she is installed as Mmrahene of the Akuapem Traditional Area on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The installation of Sophia Akuffo marks a significant milestone for the respected jurist and stateswoman, whose decades of exemplary service to Ghana and the international community have earned widespread admiration.
According to a statement issued by the descendants of Nana Kwasi Akuffo I, known as the Akuffo Descendants, the ceremony will take place during the revered Awukudae celebration at the palace of Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III in Akropong-Akuapem.

The family described the installation as a “momentous honour” for both the Akuffo Descendants and the Akuapem Traditional Area.
Upon her installation, Sophia Akuffo will assume the stool name Nana Abena Boafoa Akuffo and will be formally presented to His Royal Majesty Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III during the main durbar.
The event will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Akuffo Fi (Akuffo House), the ancestral home of the Akuffo Descendants, with the principal durbar scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Okuapehene’s palace.
Sophia Akuffo has built an exceptional legacy in law, governance and international justice.
She served as Chief Justice of Ghana from 2017 to 2019 and has held several prominent positions, including:
- President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights
- Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Ghana
- Member of Ghana’s Council of State
Her installation as Mmrahene is seen as a fitting recognition of her remarkable contributions to justice, leadership and national development.
The installation is expected to draw traditional leaders, members of the legal fraternity, public officials and admirers from across Ghana.
