President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and long-term mitigation efforts following the devastating floods that submerged parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana.

The directive, announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, forms part of the government’s emergency response to the widespread destruction caused by hours of unusually heavy rainfall.

Under the directive, GH¢150 million has been allocated for immediate humanitarian relief to individuals and communities affected by the flooding, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be invested in flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the frequency and impact of future flooding.

Armed Forces and police deployed

President Mahama has also ordered the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief operations.

The additional security personnel are expected to assist with search and rescue efforts, maintain public safety and support the distribution of relief items to affected communities.

Flood devastation

Earlier in the day, President Mahama conducted an aerial inspection of flood-hit areas to assess the scale of the disaster firsthand.

Following the aerial tour, the President announced a series of emergency interventions aimed at protecting lives, supporting displaced residents and strengthening measures to minimise future flooding.

The government said the funding will facilitate rapid humanitarian assistance while accelerating drainage improvement and other flood prevention initiatives.

The latest intervention comes as emergency responders continue rescue operations in several communities affected by the floods, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and comply with safety directives.

The government has assured the public that additional measures will be implemented to address the immediate humanitarian needs of victims while pursuing long-term solutions to Ghana’s recurring flood challenges.
