Côte d’Ivoire’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 32, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal to send the Scandinavian side into the last 16.
Making their first-ever appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, the Elephants produced a spirited display but were ultimately undone by the clinical finishing of Norway’s star striker, who netted his fifth goal of the tournament and his 60th international goal.
The result ends a memorable tournament for Emerse Faé’s side, who exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout rounds.
Côte d’Ivoire began brightly and looked the more dangerous side during the opening exchanges.

Their attacking width once again proved a major weapon as Ghislain Konan tested Norway early before Yan Diomande delivered a pinpoint cross for Nicolas Pépé, whose close-range effort was cleared off the line by Kristoffer Ajer.
Despite the early pressure, it was Norway who broke the deadlock when Antonio Nusa cut inside from the left and curled a superb strike into the far corner for his first goal of the tournament.
The Elephants refused to surrender and increased the pressure after halftime.
Substitute Amad Diallo transformed the contest almost immediately after coming on, first making a crucial defensive clearance before producing a moment of brilliance at the other end.
The Manchester United winger exchanged passes with Nicolas Pépé before weaving through two Norwegian defenders and firing an unstoppable shot beyond goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to level the scores.
It was Diallo’s second goal as a substitute at the tournament, further cementing his status as one of Côte d’Ivoire’s standout performers.
With extra time looming, Norway’s biggest star once again proved the difference.
Erling Haaland capitalised on Norway’s attacking pressure to restore his side’s lead, ensuring the two-time African champions could not complete their comeback.
Diallo almost forced extra time in stoppage time with a superb free-kick destined for the top corner, but Nyland produced an outstanding save to preserve Norway’s advantage and end the Elephants’ dream.
Although eliminated, Côte d’Ivoire leave the tournament with plenty of positives.
Norway will now face Brazil in the Round of 16 on 5 July in New York/New Jersey.
