Algeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end after a disciplined Switzerland side secured a comfortable 2-0 victory to book their place in the Round of 16.

The North Africans struggled to match the intensity of Murat Yakin’s men, who took control early and never looked back at BC Place in Vancouver.

Switzerland opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Breel Embolo. The goal came after Johan Manzambi produced a determined run into the penalty area before cutting the ball back for Embolo to finish from close range.

Facing the country he once managed between 2014 and 2021, Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic hoped to inspire a second-half comeback after limiting Switzerland to a single goal before the interval.

However, those hopes were dashed almost immediately after the restart.

Just one minute into the second half, Dan Ndoye capitalised on a poor clearance by Rafik Belghali, calmly controlling the ball inside the penalty area before firing past goalkeeper Luca Zidane to double Switzerland’s advantage.

The two-goal deficit proved too much for Algeria, who found it difficult to create meaningful scoring opportunities against a well-organised Swiss defence.

Switzerland, who entered the fixture having lost only once in their previous 17 matches, comfortably managed the remainder of the contest to secure a fourth consecutive qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Swiss will remain in Vancouver, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16 on July 7.

For Algeria, the defeat brings an end to their World Cup journey after failing to find a way past one of the tournament’s most organised teams.
