Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has praised the Black Stars for their resilience and determination despite the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026, describing their performance as a source of pride for the nation.

The Black Stars bowed out of the tournament after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium on Friday, bringing Ghana’s World Cup campaign in North America to an end.

Although the result ended Ghana’s hopes of progressing to the last 16, Okraku said the players had exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage when many had written them off before the tournament.

In a statement released by the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku commended the team’s commitment and fighting spirit throughout the competition.

“Our journey ended at the Round of 32 of the tournament, and as disappointing as this is for all of us, we are immensely proud of the team for the courage and passion they portrayed in representing the country,” he said.

He noted that the Black Stars had silenced critics by qualifying from a challenging group to reach the knockout rounds.

“Before the start of the 2026 World Cup, many doubted the team’s ability to compete at this global stage. Yet, the Black Stars responded by qualifying from a difficult group into the Round of 32. That resilience should make every Ghanaian and our supporters proud,” he added.

The GFA President expressed confidence that the experience gained at the tournament would serve as a foundation for future success.

According to him, the technical team and players have acquired valuable lessons that will strengthen the national team ahead of upcoming international competitions.

“Football is a journey of both triumph and learning. Every challenge strengthens our resolve, and every experience prepares us for future opportunities. The technical team and players have learned invaluable lessons from this 2026 World Cup campaign that will make the Black Stars stronger to compete for future laurels,” Kurt Okraku stated.

Ghana entered the FIFA World Cup 2026 amid modest expectations but produced a spirited campaign to qualify from a difficult Group K ahead of several fancied opponents.

The Black Stars showed determination and discipline throughout the group stage to secure a place in the Round of 32, rekindling hopes of another memorable World Cup run.

However, those hopes were dashed against a well-organised Colombia side, who secured a 1-0 victory through Jhon Arias’ first-half strike. Despite creating several opportunities, including an early long-range effort from Thomas Partey, Ghana were unable to find an equaliser and exited the tournament.

The defeat ended Ghana’s campaign but marked the country’s first appearance in the knockout stages of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup, providing a platform on which the team hopes to build in future tournaments.
