Crackdown on crime: 44 suspects nabbed in alleged student drug distribution ring

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled an alleged drug distribution network accused of producing and supplying narcotic-infused products to university students across parts of the Kumasi Metropolis, leading to the arrest of 44 suspects during a major intelligence-led operation.

The operation, carried out by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT) in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, was conducted between July 3 and July 5, 2026, targeting several communities identified as drug trafficking hotspots.

According to a police statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the operation focused on criminal enclaves including Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, Ash Town, Kodie, Bremang, Pankrono, Gyinyaase, and surrounding communities.

Police said 41 males and three females were arrested for various narcotics-related offences as officers dismantled what investigators describe as a well-organised network allegedly involved in producing, distributing and selling narcotic-infused products, particularly to university students.

Among the principal suspects is Emmanuel Duah, 24, who is alleged to have manufactured cannabis-infused toffees, promoted them on social media and sold them mainly to students.

Another suspect, Richard Boateng, 45, is accused of producing cannabis-infused alcoholic beverages allegedly intended for distribution within student communities.

Police also identified Frederick Agyei as a suspected major supplier of cannabis to university students in the metropolis.

During the operation, officers recovered a significant quantity of suspected narcotic substances and other exhibits believed to have been used in the illegal enterprise.

The items seized include:

  • 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol (Trama King) tablets
  • Quantities of 250mg Tramadol tablets
  • 400 sealed wraps of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances
  • Locally prepared fruit juice suspected to contain narcotic substances
  • A double-door refrigerator containing locally prepared concoctions believed to contain narcotics
  • Rizla rolling papers
  • A sealed black polythene bag containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotics
  • Nine casino jackpot machines believed to have been used in illegal activities

The Police said all exhibits have been secured for forensic examination.

The suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations, while security agencies intensify efforts to apprehend other individuals believed to be connected to the alleged drug syndicate.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students, educational institutions and communities from illicit drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

The Service also appealed to the public to continue providing credible information that will assist law enforcement agencies in combating drug-related crime across the country.
