The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has reportedly detained two officials of the Energy Commission as part of ongoing investigations into a consignment of charcoal allegedly laced with methamphetamine that was intercepted by Australian authorities.

The officials are being questioned over their alleged involvement in the approval process for the export shipment, which investigators believe may be linked to an international drug trafficking operation.

The Energy Commission is the state agency responsible for issuing permits and licences for charcoal exports from Ghana.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, NACOC suspects the two officials may possess critical information regarding the processing and approval of the export documents, as well as the circumstances under which the shipment left the country.

The detention forms part of a wider investigation aimed at identifying all individuals connected to the suspected drug smuggling network and determining whether established export procedures were followed or deliberately circumvented.

Authorities are also examining whether any lapses or irregularities occurred during the licensing process that enabled the consignment to be exported.

The latest development follows intensified investigations after Australian authorities intercepted the shipment and reportedly discovered methamphetamine concealed within the charcoal consignment.

NACOC has yet to announce any charges against the two officials formally, and investigations remain ongoing.
