The Parliament of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the death of His Royal Majesty, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, the 41st Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom and President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs.

In a statement signed by the Director of Media Relations, David Sebastian Damoah, Parliament extended its deepest condolences to the Gbewaa Palace, the Dagbon Traditional Council, the royal family, and the people of Dagbon following the passing of the revered traditional ruler on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Parliament described the late Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II as a statesman whose leadership was defined by peace, reconciliation, and unity.

The statement recalled that Yaa-Naa Abukari II ascended the Yendi skin on January 18, 2019, after a historic peace process that brought an end to years of conflict between the Abudu and Andani royal gates over the Dagbon chieftaincy.

His enskinment, Parliament noted, marked a significant turning point in Ghana’s history, ending one of the country’s longest-running traditional leadership disputes and ushering in a period of healing and restoration of authority within the Dagbon Kingdom.

“Yaa-Naa Abukari II was a true statesman whose leadership demonstrated the enduring value of dialogue, unity and reconciliation,” Parliament said.

The Legislature added that his commitment to peace strengthened not only Dagbon’s traditional institutions but also contributed to national cohesion.

As Dagbon mourns, Parliament urged the people of the kingdom to remain united and preserve the late King’s legacy of peace.

“Let there be no conflict in our grief, let there be no discord in our mourning,” the statement quoted the Palace as appealing.

Parliament prayed for strength and comfort for the late Yaa-Naa’s family, chiefs, and the people of Dagbon, and asked for the soul of the revered monarch to rest in perfect peace.
