Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga has been named the next Majority Leader of Parliament, following President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to appoint Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Multiple sources within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus have indicated that James Agalga’s Majority Leader bid has gained overwhelming support, positioning him as the preferred choice to lead the government’s business in Parliament.
The expected leadership transition follows President Mahama’s first cabinet reshuffle, announced on Friday, August 7, 2026.

According to highly placed NDC sources, the governing party has settled on James Agalga ahead of South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who was also considered a strong contender for the influential parliamentary role.
Although an official announcement is yet to be made by the NDC Parliamentary Caucus, party insiders say the decision reflects confidence in Agalga’s legislative experience, leadership qualities and security expertise.
If confirmed, James Agalga will succeed Mahama Ayariga, who has left the Majority Leader position after being nominated to President Mahama’s cabinet.
Supporters within the NDC believe James Agalga possesses the experience required to effectively manage government business in Parliament.
The Builsa North legislator previously served as Deputy Minister for the Interior during President Mahama’s earlier administration and holds a Master’s degree in Conflict, Peace and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
He currently serves as Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, where he has played a prominent role in debates on national security, governance and legislative oversight.
Party strategists reportedly believe his combined executive and parliamentary experience makes him well suited to lead the Majority Caucus as government pursues its legislative agenda.
Sources also indicate that regional representation featured prominently in discussions surrounding the appointment.
Both James Agalga and Mahama Ayariga hail from the Upper East Region, a factor believed to support continuity within the NDC’s parliamentary leadership structure.
Beyond regional considerations, party leaders are said to have prioritised experience, stability and the ability to unite the Majority Caucus ahead of a demanding legislative calendar.
South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who has served as Majority Chief Whip since January 2025, was widely viewed as one of the strongest candidates for the position.
His role coordinating parliamentary strategy and managing government business earned him significant backing within sections of the caucus.
However, sources say the NDC ultimately favoured James Agalga, citing his broader executive experience and leadership credentials as critical factors in the final decision.
If formally confirmed as Majority Leader, James Agalga will immediately assume responsibility for coordinating government legislation, managing the Majority Caucus and steering parliamentary business.
He will also be expected to build consensus within the governing side while engaging an increasingly assertive Minority Caucus led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The role will be particularly significant as Parliament debates key government policies and legislation in the run-up to the 2028 general election.
