Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko is set to formally file his nomination to contest the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) today, August 26, 2026, marking a major step in his campaign to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The former Energy Minister is entering the contest on a platform of party unity, discipline, grassroots mobilisation, organisational reform and total restoration, as the NPP seeks to rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
His nomination is being backed by strong grassroots support, with more than 50 NPP constituency chairpersons purchasing and presenting his nomination forms.

Agyarko described the gesture as more than an endorsement, calling it an “instruction from the grassroots” to lead what he described as a total restoration of the NPP.
Agyarko has positioned himself as a candidate capable of bringing together the various factions within the NPP and restoring confidence among party members.
He has argued that the party’s rebuilding process must begin at the grassroots, with greater attention paid to constituency, electoral-area and polling-station structures.
According to his campaign message, grassroots executives require adequate support and resources to strengthen mobilisation, communication and voter engagement ahead of 2028.
Agyarko has also pledged to promote discipline and accountability while ensuring that party members feel valued and adequately represented.
The former Energy Minister is drawing on more than two decades of global institutional leadership experience as part of his case for the NPP national chairmanship.
His professional experience includes serving as a Vice President at the Bank of New York.
Within the NPP, he has served as Chairman of the Danquah-Busia Club of North America, Chairman of the North America branch of the party and Campaign Manager during the 2012 election.
Agyarko has consequently presented himself as a “safe and fair referee” who can work with the different groups within the party without favouritism.
More than 60 NPP constituency chairpersons from different parts of Ghana have publicly backed Agyarko’s chairmanship bid and participated in efforts to obtain his nomination forms.
The constituency chairpersons include representatives from the Central, Ashanti, Eastern, Western and Greater Accra regions.
They have cited his experience, leadership qualities and ability to unite the party as reasons for supporting his candidacy.
His campaign has also attracted endorsements from several regional stakeholders.
In the Upper East Region, Regional Chairman Elvis Figo Awonekai and other party stakeholders have expressed support for Agyarko, while he outlined proposals to rebuild party structures, strengthen unity and improve the welfare of executives.
In the North East Region, Regional Chairman Mohammed Fuseini Nurudeen assured Agyarko of the region’s support during his engagement with regional and constituency executives.
Agyarko has also received backing from Eastern Regional TESCON leaders, who endorsed his candidacy after engaging with TESCON presidents across the region.
The TESCON leaders cited his experience, political maturity and capacity to unite and rebuild the NPP.
Support for Agyarko has also come from some NPP lawmakers.
In the Northern Region, the MPs for Gushegu and Kpandai, Alhassan Tampuli and Matthew Nyindam, respectively, have declared their support for his national chairmanship bid.
In the Upper West Region, former Municipal and District Chief Executives have also endorsed Agyarko, describing him as a leader capable of promoting unity, discipline and accountability within the party.
Former Upper West Regional Minister Dr Hafiz Bin Salih has separately endorsed Agyarko, arguing that the NPP requires strong leadership to reposition itself ahead of the 2028 elections.
A central part of Agyarko’s campaign is his commitment to rebuilding the NPP’s electoral machinery to support the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 general elections.
He has described the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat as an opportunity for reflection and renewal rather than a reason for further division.
His campaign argues that the party must use the period before 2028 to strengthen its internal structures, reconnect national leadership with the grassroots and restore confidence among members.
Agyarko believes a united and disciplined party, supported by an effective grassroots organisation, will be better positioned to compete successfully in the next general election.
As he formally files his nomination, the former Energy Minister is expected to intensify his campaign for the NPP national chairmanship, with unity, restoration and electoral renewal at the centre of his message.
