President John Dramani Mahama has announced that $2 billion has been set aside to finance the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, assuring that funding will not be a challenge once work begins.
President Mahama said the money, which comes from taxpayers’ funds, has been placed in a special account at the Bank of Ghana to guarantee timely payments to the contractor throughout the construction of the major road project.
He announced on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a ceremony to hand over a 175.6-kilometre right-of-way cleared by the Ghana Armed Forces for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

According to the President, the government intends to ensure that payment certificates submitted by the contractor are settled promptly to prevent delays and maintain steady progress on the project.
“And let me also announce that this is our own money. We have not gone to borrow money from anywhere. This money is the taxpayers’ money,” President Mahama said.
President Mahama also directed the Minister for Roads and Highways to incorporate the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Regiment as a major subcontractor to the main contractor working on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The move, he said, would allow the military engineers to contribute their expertise to the construction of the strategic highway.
The funding announcement comes after the Ghana Armed Forces successfully completed the clearance of 175.6 kilometres of right-of-way for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The military completed the exercise in 19 weeks, finishing one week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.
The completion of the right-of-way clearance represents a major step towards the construction phase of the expressway, with the government now focusing on ensuring that funding and other project requirements are in place.
President Mahama’s assurance that the $2 billion funding has already been secured is expected to provide greater certainty for the implementation of the long-awaited road project.
