Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has been elected National Chairman at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.

The 56-year-old emerged from a four-way contest held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, October 3, 2026, where more than 7,000 delegates gathered to elect the party’s national officers.

John Boadu contested the chairmanship alongside former National Chairman Paul Afoko, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe.

His victory comes after Sammy Crabbe announced an alliance with him shortly before voting and urged his supporters to back the former General Secretary.

Supporters of Mr Boadu celebrated at the congress grounds as news of his victory spread after voting and counting closed.

The National Chairman election was one of nine national executive positions contested at the conference. The Electoral Commission supervised the elections, with voting conducted across 31 centres established within the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The conference also considered proposed amendments to portions of the NPP’s constitution before delegates proceeded to elect the new national leadership.

John Boadu previously served as NPP General Secretary from 2018 to 2022 and has held several other positions within the party over the years.

His election places him at the centre of the NPP’s ongoing internal reorganisation as the party rebuilds its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The new national executives are expected to provide leadership for the party’s next phase of organisation, following the completion of polling station, electoral area, constituency and regional-level elections.

The chairmanship contest was among the most closely watched races at the conference, with the four candidates seeking to lead the party’s national administration during its current period in opposition.
