Private legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legal team, Ross Osei Owusu, has said Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin should lose his position if he fails to clear his name over extortion allegations levelled against him by GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
Osei Owusu said the Minority Leader must take steps to clear his name, insisting the matter should be pursued in court.
“If he’s an extortionist, then we don’t want him as a Minority Leader of Parliament,” he said.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s Breakfast Review on October 15, 2026, the lawyer acknowledged that the allegations remained unproven but maintained that the Minority Leader must address the claims.
“It remains an allegation, but he needs to purge himself of that allegation,” he stated.
Osei Owusu urged the Minority Leader to refile his defamation suit against Gyamfi, arguing that a fresh action should correct the defects identified in the original writ and allow the case to proceed.
Julius Kwame Anthony, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also supported calls for Afenyo-Markin to lose his leadership position if he fails to clear his name.
“If not, I side with Ross that he should not remain Minority Leader with allegations around his neck as an extortionist,” Anthony said.
He also urged Afenyo-Markin to file a fresh defamation suit against Gyamfi instead of pursuing an appeal, arguing that the defects identified in the original action needed to be addressed.
Anthony alleged that concerns about the writ have been raised without being corrected, questioning whether there has been a genuine intention to pursue the case to its conclusion.
The comments follow the High Court’s dismissal of Afenyo-Markin’s GH¢15 million defamation suit against Gyamfi over the extortion allegations.
The court’s decision was linked to defects in the writ, prompting renewed debate about the Minority Leader’s legal options and political position.
