Six National Identification Authority (NIA) personnel have been arrested over alleged extortion during the free Ghana Card registration exercise for children aged six to 14 in Galaka, Upper East Region.

The NIA has also terminated the appointments of seven other members of the registration team over their alleged failure to report the misconduct.

In a statement signed by Mr Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the NIA Corporate Affairs Directorate, the Authority said the six personnel were arrested by the Bawku West District Police and are assisting with investigations.

The statement said the suspects were identified by parents of applicants as having allegedly demanded money before registering their children.

The Authority said the arrests followed an extensive internal review into the alleged misconduct.

The NIA reiterated that the Ghana Card registration exercise must be conducted in line with approved procedures and emphasised that no staff member is authorised to demand unauthorised payments from applicants or their parents.

It said allegations of misconduct are treated seriously and that appropriate disciplinary measures would continue to be taken to safeguard the integrity of its registration processes.

The Authority said it remains committed to ensuring fair and professional service delivery.

It urged members of the public to report suspected misconduct through its official channels.
