The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on Ghanaians to embrace the outcome of the 2024 general elections with humility and focus on national unity to drive development.
In a heartfelt Christmas and New Year message, the Speaker reflected on the country’s challenges in governance, the economy, and democratic processes. He expressed optimism that these trials would serve as valuable lessons for improving governance in the years ahead.
Bagbin’s gratitude
“I am happy God has intervened in this country’s rather difficult elections. None of us thought this would be the result of the 2024 general election. But as God will have it, it has happened. My call to all of us is to accept the results in humility and agree that this is how the Almighty God wants it to be,” he remarked.
His call followed the resounding victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Dramani Mahama, who reclaimed the presidency and secured a significant parliamentary majority.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, faced a substantial defeat, losing the presidency and several key parliamentary seats.
Reflection on the election result
Mr. Bagbin urged Ghanaians to reflect on the election outcomes, examine what went wrong and right, and work together to strengthen the nation. He warned against division and emphasized that collaboration and dialogue are essential for progress.
“We are living in tribes. We will be divided, and that will give room for hatred. As you know, the devil will play its role. I think it is important for us to come together. I think it is important for us to continue to be open to each other,” he added.
The Speaker further called on political stakeholders to use peaceful means and the rule of law to resolve disputes, stressing that national unity is the bedrock of development.
