The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has expressed grave concerns about the safety of electoral officers in the upcoming rerun at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre in the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
This follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive to rerun elections at the polling station, a decision the NDC has firmly rejected.
The party in the Constituency, he said, has not taken any decision but stressed that if the EC should wish to go ahead, it can do so but warned they cannot guarantee the safety of the electoral officers.
Safety of electoral officers
He said, “I can’t guarantee the safety of the electoral officers that will be deployed to conduct that single polling station because the community has indicated clearly… that should they dare, they have voted,” Nukpenu stated in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
According to him, the community insists that their votes on December 7, which overwhelmingly favoured the NDC’s Elikplim Akurugu, remain valid and any attempt to rerun the election would not be accepted.
He also issued a strong warning against the use of security forces to intimidate residents.
“Nobody should think they will use the police or the military to intimidate the people of Abokobi. They will rise to the occasion, and what people want to see, they will see it,” Nukpenu cautioned.
The situation in Dome Kwabenya remains tense as the rerun approaches, with heightened concerns over potential clashes.
