Social media activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been summoned to appear before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, to provide evidence backing an allegation he made on social media. Mr. Barker-Vormawor accused the Committee’s members of accepting ‘bribes’ from nominees in exchange for their approval in a post on his X handle. He wrote, “So all the monies the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved, are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic.” However, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, ejected these claims, calling them baseless. Speaking on Tuesday, January 28, just before the vetting of the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Mr. Ahiafor stated that neither he nor any member of the committee had engaged in such practices. Mr. Ahiafor instructed the Clerk of the Committee to formally invite Mr. Barker-Vormawor to appear before the committee on Wednesday to substantiate his allegations, warning that legal action would follow if no evidence is provided. “I am directing the Clerk to the Committee to invite him to appear before the committee tomorrow [Wednesday] to substantiate his claims, or we will apply the necessary law,” he said. Mr. Barker-Vormawor took to his X handle to issue a terse response to the Committee Chairman’s directive. He wrote, “This is how a democracy improves. I look forward to appearing before the Appointments Committee tomorrow. Thank you.
