Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to leverage its so-called “super-majority” to effectively conduct parliamentary business.
The Effutu MP stressed the glaring absence of several NDC MPs during proceedings, questioning the credibility of the Majority caucus’s claims of having a dominant presence in Parliament following the 2024 elections.
“You claim to be a majority, yet you can’t even muster a quorum. Count the numbers—you don’t have enough members to proceed,” Afenyo-Markin asserted, pointing to the visibly sparse attendance on the Majority side.
He expressed frustration over the Majority’s inability to rally its 187 members to the Chamber, despite their frequent boasts about their numerical strength.
“They talk about their numbers, but when it comes to actual governance, they can’t even get their members to show up,” he remarked.
NDC super majority
Afenyo-Markin fired the salvo last Friday after members of the Minority raised the question of quorum yet again with just a few MPs in the chamber when sitting for the day commenced.
While Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the Minority’s willingness to cooperate for the sake of good governance, he did not hold back his criticism.
“Today, you’re asking for mercy. We’re in Lent. We’re in Ramadan, so we will extend to you mercy,” he quipped sarcastically.
He called on Deputy Majority Chief Whip Richard Acheampong to take responsibility for ensuring better attendance among Majority members.
“You must bring your members in. This so-called super-majority—prove it by getting them to the House,” he demanded.
