The Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has praised the 9th Parliament for its pivotal role in strengthening democracy and fostering economic recovery during its first meeting.

Addressing the House on Saturday, March 29, as Parliament adjourned sine die, he reflected on key legislative milestones and the unwavering commitment of lawmakers to national progress.

“The first meeting of the first session of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which commenced on January 7, 2025, marks more than just the start of a new parliamentary calendar—it signifies a new era of renewal, hope, and unity for our beloved nation,” he stated.

Legislative milestones of first meeting

Hon. Ayariga underscored several crucial legislative victories, including the successful vetting and approval of President John Mahama’s ministerial nominees. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the process, particularly an incident on January 30, but emphasized the fairness and transparency that ensured Ghana is led by the best.

“We must serve the people with integrity. Despite the hurdles, we have ensured that the nation is governed by capable hands,” he noted.

One of the most notable legislative triumphs, according to the Majority Leader, was the repeal of controversial financial policies such as the e-levy and betting tax, which had placed a financial burden on citizens.

“This demonstrates our unwavering commitment to listening to the concerns of the people and making Ghana’s tax policies more just and equitable,” he asserted.

A leaner and effective cabinet

Hon. Ayariga commended President Mahama for honoring his campaign promise to reduce the size of government from 88 to 60 ministers, a move aimed at enhancing efficiency.

“We can proudly say that this promise has been delivered. Our government is now leaner, more focused, and poised to serve the people effectively,” he affirmed.

He lauded the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy, presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, as a blueprint for national resilience and recovery.

“This budget is not just numbers and projections; it is a symbol of hope for every Ghanaian striving for a better tomorrow,” he declared.

The passage of the Appropriation Act, he noted, will ensure that national resources are directed toward impactful projects that uplift communities and stimulate economic growth.

Institutional oversight and engagement

Hon. Ayariga urged MPs to use the parliamentary recess for oversight duties, including visits to state institutions to ensure accountability and efficiency.

According to him, the State of the Nation Address and the Finance Minister’s report have revealed weaknesses within state institutions, particularly state-owned enterprises.

We must champion institutional revival,” he urged.

He also encouraged lawmakers to reconnect with their constituents, listen to their concerns, and return with renewed determination to address pressing national issues.

Gratitude and vision

Hon. Ayariga expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Speaker of Parliament, his deputies, the Clerk, the parliamentary staff, the security personnel, and all who contributed to the success of the first meeting.

“The work we have started is just the beginning. There is still much to be done, and I am confident that with unity and purpose, we will continue to build on these successes for a brighter Ghana,” he emphasized.

Ghana’s future, the Majority Leader stressed, is being shaped by a dedicated legislature committed to progress, fairness, and the prosperity of all citizens.
