A new report by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has revealed disturbing figures about the skyrocketing cost of winning elections in Ghana, raising alarm over the country’s democratic health and the deepening grip of corruption.

According to the report, a successful bid for both presidential and parliamentary seats now demands a staggering $150 million, along with an additional GH¢10 million.

The findings point to the growing monetisation of politics, which the report warns is undermining public accountability and promoting corruption in governance.

Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Programmes at CDD-Ghana, described the situation as ‘alarming’ during a presentation to the Constitutional Review Committee over the weekend.

“We must begin electing leaders with integrity and orienting them towards the public interest. This focus on public welfare is what truly drives national development, Dr. Asante urged.

He stressed that internal regulation by political parties is no longer sufficient.

“There must be firm legal provisions to disqualify candidates who breach electoral regulations, enforce asset declarations, and ensure robust oversight of political parties—ultimately led by the Electoral Commission,” he said.

The revelations have sparked renewed calls for electoral reform, with governance experts warning that the cost of politics in Ghana is fast becoming a barrier to genuine democratic leadership.
