Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh launched a scathing attack on the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s CEO and management during a surprise inspection on Tuesday, exposing deplorable sanitary conditions that threaten patient safety.
The Minister, accompanied by Tamale North MP Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini, was appalled by the hospital’s filthy state, warning that the facility could spread diseases rather than cure them.
Despite management blaming water shortages for the unhygienic environment, Hon. Akandoh dismissed their excuses as “lame”, demanding immediate action.
“If this is how you behave in my presence, how do you treat ordinary patients? This is unacceptable!” The Minister fumed, visibly angered by the negligence on display.

Shockingly, staff revealed that critical units like the ICU and Emergency Department often rely on manual water deliveries in yellow barrels —forcing doctors and nurses to improvise just to maintain basic hygiene.
“People come here sick and may leave with more infections. This isn’t a hospital—it’s a hazard zone!” Akandoh warned.
While administrators acknowledged the water crisis, they admitted no effective contingency measures were in place. The Minister ordered the CEO to take responsibility, insisting: “You must find alternatives now—that’s why you’re the CEO!”
The Minister’s visit follows public outrage over a reported patient death in the ICU, sparking demands for urgent reforms.
Akandoh vowed decisive action but the revelations have already exposed a healthcare system in crisis.
