The Kumasi High Court has sentenced 36-year-old Dominic Afriyie, alias ‘GH,’ to life imprisonment plus 120 years with hard labour for a heinous robbery and cold-blooded murder in Atasemanso in 2021.
Presided over by His Lordship Mr. Abdul Razak, ESQ, the court delivered the judgment on Thursday, May 15, after a comprehensive trial. A seven-member jury found Afriyie guilty of two counts of robbery and one count of murder.
Armed robbery
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the horrific incident occurred on November 20, 2021, when Afriyie stormed the residence of 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu, armed and unprovoked.
He robbed the victim of two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH₵1,500 in cash before fatally shooting him in his own home.
Acting on intelligence about a planned robbery, police arrested Afriyie and three accomplices on December 31, 2021, around 2:20 a.m. in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20. A search of the vehicle revealed two pistols and two single-barrel shotguns.
After thorough investigations, police determined that Afriyie acted alone in the deadly attack on Mr. Klu. Though he pleaded not guilty, overwhelming evidence secured his conviction.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Region, lauded the court’s decision.
“This conviction underscores our commitment to bringing violent criminals to justice and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” DSP Ahianyo said.
The sentence has been hailed as a chilling verdict that underscores the hard stance on violent crime.
