The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has launched a decongestion exercise today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025, targeting key areas of the Central Business District (CBD) as part of efforts to restore order and improve sanitation in the capital.

The initial phase of the operation will focus on high-traffic zones around the AMA Head Office, including stretches from Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and from Opera Square to Adabraka.

AMA Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, confirmed that the exercise will intensify in the coming days, especially along strategic routes such as Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.

“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed. Attention will also be given to the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel areas,” Ankrah said.

Ahead of the operation, AMA Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, engaged with street hawkers in the CBD, appealing for their support and understanding.

“I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order. We all want a better and more organised environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” Allotey told the traders.

He also stressed the government’s broader development plans, including the upcoming 24-hour economy initiative, which he said would eventually create more flexible opportunities for vendors.

“Our upcoming 24-hour economy policy will create new opportunities for you to sell your goods overnight. But for now, I plead that we stay off the pavement as we carry out this important cleanup,” he added.

The AMA’s decongestion campaign is part of a larger urban renewal strategy aimed at tackling congestion, improving mobility, and ensuring a cleaner, safer city for residents and visitors alike.
